Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 with

Miss Bhatti and Mrs Shirodkar

We are excited to be starting a new school year with your child and we hope to help your child settle easily by building upon the already established routines and expectations that the children encountered in their Early years setting and preparing them for their continuing primary education.  I have provided you with some information, below, of what you will expect during the year. Many of these expectations will be familiar as they are whole school expectations and some will be particular to our class.

Reading

You will be provided with a home learning packet with a book bag book and a reading diary which needs to be in school everyday.  As well as this your child will have an access code for Oxford Owl eBooks, this is fixed inside the cover of the reading diary.  The eBook will be an online copy of the text that the children have been learning to read in class that week.  The reasoning behind this is for your child to develop confidence reading a book that they already know well.  Your child will gather more confidence if you read a few pages a day, rather than a whole book.  The expectation is that you will read at least 4 times a week at home and that you will sign the reading diary.  I will also be providing a comprehension book mark with ideas of questions that you can ask your child about what they have read.  This helps the children to tune into their reading and shows that they understand the text. Book bag books will be taken in on a Thursday to be changed and returned on a Friday

Spellings

Spellings will be issued on a Friday and there will be a short test the following Friday.  There will be 5 spellings which are linked to The Year 1 or 2 common exception words and other areas of our curriculum.  Phonetic spellings are taught through our phonics scheme daily.

PE / Forest School

PE sessions will be on a Thursday afternoon.  Children will come to school dressed in their PE kit.  Please see the uniform list for the correct clothing requirements.  We will also use our Forest School area on a Tuesday afternoon, so the  children will need to dress appropriately for the weather.  This may mean wellies if it is or has been raining.

Clothing

Please label all pieces of clothing, especially jumpers and cardigans. Jumpers and cardigans are usually identical and staff cannot be held accountable for confusions and mix ups of un-named uniform.

Year 1 Weekly Timetable

Our timetable changes during the penultimate week of each half term where we have an Arts and Assessment Week.  During this week we teach Music, Art and Design Technology as well as carry out assessments in phonics, English and Math to inform future planning. Phonics, PE and PSHE are taught the same throughout.

Summer Term Curriculum Map

Our Theme this term is Castles. Below you will find the curriculum map which your child will cover during this topic for History, Geography, Art and Design Technology, as well as some of the vocabulary which will be used.  There are some examples of home learning tasks that you can do to extend and deepen your child's learning, knowledge and understanding, if you so wish.  I have also included the Science overview for this half term which shows our learning objectives and some of the vocabulary so that, if you would like, you can talk about these words and their meaning to help them have a head start.  Alongside this theme we will be using the Maths No Problem scheme for Year 1 Maths and for English we will be reading and exploring the texts, Look Up (in the first half term), and the Claude in the City (in the second half term). In Religious Education we will be learning about Sacred texts and Sacred places.  Our prayer corner will be forgiveness and our Big Question will be 'What does God have planned for me?'.  PE and PSHE will be taught by Mr Ashby and Mrs Entwhistle on a Tuesday afternoon and the children will need to come to school in their PE kit.  There will be more parent events coming up for our Arts and Assessments weeks so please check the newsletter for updates.  We are in the process of planning a school trip to Kenilworth Castle in the second half of this term.  Also in the second half of this term the children will be carrying out the Phonics Screen Check (PSC) so being in everyday for phonics will be vital but if the children can revise their sound knowledge and 'fredding' at home this will also be a great support.

If you have any questions about the curriculum please feel free to get in touch.
