Curriculum
Our curriculum and the way it is delivered, is centred around our vision:
AIM EVER HIGHER
Together we learn and grow.
Growing together in love and learning, we aim ever rooted and inspired
by the teachings of Jesus.
And draws inspiration from:
‘A – Aspirational
At Leigh Church of England Academy, in keeping with our vision of ‘Aim Ever Higher,’ aspiration is at the heart of everything we do. We believe every child has the potential to achieve great things, and we have designed a curriculum which inspires ambition, resilience, and creativity from the very start of their learning journey. We set high expectations for all pupils, encouraging them to aim ever higher academically, socially, and personally.
Our aspirational curriculum goes beyond knowledge acquisition—it fosters confidence, curiosity, and the courage to take on challenges. We provide opportunities for children as part of a broad and balanced curriculum, extracurricular activities, and leadership roles that broaden their horizons and encourage them to ‘Aim Ever Higher’ in all that they do. Inspirational role models—whether through literature, visitors, or community engagement—demonstrate what is possible, helping children to dream big and believe in their own potential
L – Logically Sequenced
Our curriculum is purposefully and logically sequenced to ensure that knowledge builds securely over time. From Early Years to Year 6, each subject has a clearly mapped journey, so that prior knowledge is revisited, deepened, and connected to new learning. Lessons follow consistent, research-informed structures, supporting children to Know More and Remember More. This clear structure helps children feel secure, builds confidence, and reduces cognitive overload—enabling them to thrive.
Assessment plays a crucial role in this process. Teachers continuously assess pupils’ understanding through a variety of methods—formative assessments, retrieval practices, and regular check-ins—to identify what children know and where they need further support or challenge. This ongoing assessment enables teachers to adapt their planning and teaching, moving learning forward effectively and ensuring every child makes progress. By linking prior learning explicitly to new concepts, we create a coherent and purposeful learning journey for all.
I – Inclusive
We are proud to be a richly diverse community, and our curriculum is inclusive by design. Children see themselves—and others—reflected in what they learn, through carefully chosen texts, topics, and experiences. Representation matters, so we explore issues such as racism, inequality, neurodivergence, and displacement as part of the core curriculum. Our RE and PSHE teaching fosters respect and empathy, and many of our trips and visits help pupils explore not only the past, but their past.
We are committed to meeting the diverse needs of all learners, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Learning is adapted through targeted scaffolding, differentiated tasks, and specialist support to ensure every child can access the curriculum fully. We use a range of evidence-based strategies and personalised interventions to support cognitive, sensory, and social-emotional needs. This tailored approach empowers children with SEND to build confidence, develop independence, and achieve their potential alongside their peers. Our inclusive ethos ensures that every child feels a sense of belonging and value, celebrated for their unique strengths and contributions
V – Values and Wellbeing
At the heart of our curriculum are the core values of respect, responsibility, and readiness, which guide how we live and learn together. We believe in nurturing not only knowledge but also character—encouraging our children to be the change they wish to see in the world. Through a deep commitment to values such as Wisdom, Hope, Community and Dignity, we inspire pupils to act with compassion and purpose in all they do.
Our curriculum fosters these values explicitly, embedding British Values—democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance—into everyday learning and interactions. Children are encouraged to take ownership of their actions, stand up for what is right, and contribute positively to their community and beyond.
Strong routines, consistent structures, and a nurturing school community create stability and security, which underpin emotional wellbeing, for the whole Leigh family. We work closely with parents, carers, and external agencies to ensure a holistic approach to each child’s health and happiness. This commitment to wellbeing ensures that our pupils are equipped not just to learn, but to flourish.
E – Empowering and Enriching
Our curriculum doesn’t just prepare children for the future—it empowers them to shape it. Advocacy and pupil voice are woven throughout our curriculum, giving children meaningful opportunities to be heard, take action, and lead change. From debating current issues to organising charity events and engaging with community leaders, our children are inspired to become active, thoughtful citizens.
We also enrich learning through a wide range of carefully planned trips, visits, and real-world experiences that bring the curriculum to life, supporting children to navigate the wows, nows and ows of life. These opportunities deepen understanding, spark curiosity, and help children make connections beyond the classroom. Dedicated Arts and Assessment Weeks provide extended time for creativity, collaboration, and personal expression, allowing children to explore subjects like Art, DT, and Music through project-based learning. Every experience is designed to broaden horizons, deepen knowledge, and empower children to thrive.
Our Curriculum isn’t just words on a page – it’s lived and breathed – it is ALIVE
