Welcome to Year 1's Class Page
We are looking forward to a full academic year this year with lots of great themes and a new curriculum. Year 1 will be different to what the children were accustomed to in the Early Years settings but I will be building upon the already established routines and expectations and preparing the children for their continuing primary education. I have provided you with some information, below, of what you will expect during your child's year in Year 1. Many of these expectations will be familiar as they are whole school expectations and some will be particular to our class.
You will be given a packet with a home reading book in which needs to be in school every day as we will try to hear everyone read as often as possible. As well as this your child will bring home the phonics reading book which they have been learning to read in the previous week. Your child will gather more confidence if you read a bit from each as one is familiar to them and the other is for you support your child with. The expectation is that you will read at least 4 times a week at home weekly and this will be logged. Your child does not need to read the whole book every night. A few pages a day will suffice. I will also be providing a comprehension book mark with ideas of questions that you can ask your child about what they have read. This helps the children to tune into their reading and shows that they understand the text. Books will be changed on a Friday
Spellings will be issued on a Friday and there will be short test the following Thursday. There will be 5 spellings which are linked to The Year 1 common exception words, other areas of our curriculum and phonics.

Summer Term Curriculum Map
Our Theme this term is Castles. Below you will find the objectives which your child will cover during this topic for History, Geography, Art and Design Technology. There are some examples of home learning tasks that you can do to extend and deepen your child's learning, knowledge and understanding , if you so wish. Alongside this theme we will be using the Maths No Problem scheme for Year 1 Maths and for English we will be reading and exploring the texts, Look Up (in the first half term), and Claude in the City (in the second half term). In Religious Education we will be learning about sacred books and sacred places. Our music topics will be My Imagination where we learn about the pulse, rhythm, beat and pitch. We will also learn new songs and attempt different arrangements using voice. PE and PSHE will be taught by Mr Ashby and Mrs Entwhistle on a Friday afternoon and the children will need to come to school in their PE kit. If you have any questions about the curriculum please feel free to get in touch.
