Geography

The Geography curriculum at Leigh Church of England Academy will ensure that all children leave our school well-equipped with geographical knowledge about places, people, resources and natural and human environments – both in Britain and abroad. Children will be given the opportunity to develop an understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes, understanding the interaction between them, and how the world has changed over time. 

We aim to provide a Geography curriculum that is inclusive, challenging and engaging. In Geography, pupils will learn the importance of respect both for the planet, on which we depend, and the diverse people with whom we share it. By providing our pupils with a stimulating, knowledge-rich curriculum, we aim to foster ambitious young people who aspire to make their world a better place, whether this is simply as globally responsible 21st century citizens or in a professional capacity as geologists, cartographers, architects, documentary presenters or ecological campaigners. In order to begin their journey towards these goals, pupils will be taught, and given opportunities to practise, the skills and techniques that they will need, in a variety of local, national and international contexts, making links between all three

In conjunction with the aims of the National Curriculum, our geography teaching offers opportunities for children to gain:

•       A secure knowledge of where places are and what they are like, both in Britain and the wider world

•       An understanding of the ways in which places are interdependent and interconnected

•       A wide range of geographical knowledge and vocabulary.

•       The ability to apply questioning skills and make links with mathematical and scientific skills, in order to record, interpret/analyse geographical findings.

•       The ability to express balanced opinions, rooted in knowledge and understanding about current issues in society and the environment.
