Art

The Art curriculum at Leigh Church of England Academy will ensure that all children leave our school well-equipped with a broadened understanding, knowledge, and skills through an exposure to different artists, architects, and craftspeople. Children will explore different techniques and styles through study and experimentation with the opportunity to analyse, plan, reproduce and evaluate creative works.

In Early years, Art is taught through the children exploring and using media and materials and being imaginative in their learning through play and is covered under the ‘Expressive Art and Design’ area of the EYFS curriculum.  Art is introduced though activities that encourage children to explore and mix colours and to describe and create texture, and to choose these for a particular purpose.  They are also taught how to use line to form shapes to represent people and objects.  These activities are planned around the children’s interests.

Following Early Years, Children undertake half termly Art learning, where the curriculum time for the subject is blocked out during the penultimate week of the half term. Undertaking at least 6 hours of Art across the week allows children to focus entirely on the progression of their skills as they build towards a final project, which they then regularly share with parents and carers. This process allows our children the sufficient time to develop and refine their knowledge, skills and ideas, enabling them to produce something of real quality that they can be proud of accomplishing.

We are an inclusive school which ensures children and staff never stop learning; we set high expectations and aim to support individuals during every step of their journey to become expert thinkers resulting in the acquisition of knowledge, concepts and skills.

At Leigh Church of England Academy, in conjunction with the aims of the National Curriculum, our Art teaching offers opportunities for children to:

  • Develop their curiosity to enrich their creativity.
  • Think innovatively and develop creative procedural understanding.
  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  •  Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • Have a web of knowledge about the great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
