English
In Nursery and Reception, we follow the Early Years Curriculum and encourage all of our children to be good communicators, story tellers, emergent writings and effective listeners. We play lots of rhyming and alliteration games and encourage oral blending and segmenting.
From Reception onwards, we use a scheme called Read Write Inc.
Read Write Inc., developed by Ruth Miskin, provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy and English. It is used by more than a quarter of the UK's primary schools and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.
When children finish the Read Write Inc. programme in Year 2, they move onto the Literacy and Language scheme, which develops children’s comprehension, writing and spoken language. This, alongside the Read Write Inc. spelling programme, provides a comprehensive English curriculum.
In Key stage 2, children continue with the Read Write Inc. Spelling programme and then also have daily English lessons consisting of Reading, Writing, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. They have a mixture of whole class, group and individual reading sessions where children read and are read to by staff. Writing is extended through themes, Science and RE as we deliver a broad and balanced curriculum.
We follow the Nelson Thornes handwriting scheme which is applied consistently across the school.
Children who need some additional support may access Fresh Start - a catch up English programme for Year 5/6 children. Children also may have some one to one or small group teaching using Precision Teaching, SOS spelling, CGP, Rising stars, BR@P and other interventions and booster materials available at the school.
