Week Beginning 5th February 2024

This week was ‘Children’s Mental Health Week’.

We talked about how important it is to not only keep our bodies healthy by eating well and exercising but to also look after our mental health and feelings. We’ve talked about different feelings and what we can do/who can help us when we have feelings that make us feel bad.

We learnt that it’s normal and ok to feel happy, sad, angry, worried or confused sometimes.

We've based a lot of our learning this week around the book 'Little Meerkat's Big Panic'. This story helps us understand what is going on in our brains when we are feeling our feelings. Our brain has different parts that have different jobs when it comes to feelings and behaviours. We can think of these parts as being like a Meerkat (spotting possible danger and sounding the alarm), Elephant (working out and remembering the feelings) and Monkey (thinking, planning and calming down). At the end of the book there were some ideas of ways to calm down our Meerkat brain, such as breathing exercises and stretching, so we tried some of them out!

We’ve been using a ‘5 Point Scale’ to show how we’re feeling over the week. It has really helped us identify how we feel and talk about our emotions.  We also understand what to do now when we feel 3, 4 or 5 on the scale. We have a 'Calm Corner' in our classroom and Miss Haslam reminded us how we can use it to help regulate our feelings.

We talked about different feelings and tried to show what our faces might look like when we feel these emotions. We talked about what feelings make us feel comfortable or uncomfortable and what we can do when we don't feel good. Click below to view the PowerPoint we used...

We read the story of ‘The Colour Monster’ which helped us understand different feelings and that sometimes our feelings are all mixed up.

In PSHE this week with Mrs Entwistle we talked about our goals and ambitions and what we want to be when we grow up.

PE this week...

Tuesday was Safer Internet Day. We learnt about how to stay safe online. One of the stories we read that helped us to learn how to stay safe online was 'Buddy The Dog's Internet Safety Story'.  We also read the story of 'Chicken Clicking' which taught us an important lesson about staying safe on the internet and not making friends with people we don't know.

We all know now that if something strange happens when we're on a tablet, phone or computer, or if we're unsure of something, we must tell a grown up straight away.

On Wednesday we had a visit from 'ZooLab'! We met Turbo and Jaws the giant snails, Ponyo the white tree frog, Ricky the giant tree millipede, Tallulah the tarantula, Calcifer the corn snake and Milo the rat!

We listened very carefully to Ellie and learnt lots of interesting facts about each animal.

We were allowed to touch, stroke and hold some of the animals and we were all so gentle.

We also asked some brilliant questions and enjoyed pretending to be the different animals!

When it was Reception's turn to meet the animals, we got to play in their classroom which was so much fun! Take a look at all the photos from our exciting morning!...

On Thursday we listened to some stories Year 6 had written about how to manage our feelings and emotions.

We’ve been doing lots of super independent learning during ‘Busy Learning Time’ this week!
