Geography

The Geography curriculum at Leigh Church of England Academy will ensure that all children leave our school well-equipped with geographical knowledge about places, people, resources and natural and human environments – both in Britain and abroad. Children will be given the opportunity to develop an understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes, understanding the interaction between them, and how the world has changed over time.

The Geography curriculum is taught through our thematic approach which is linked to the overarching theme being studied.  In Early years, Geography is taught through the children learning about the world around them through play and is covered under the ‘Understanding the World’ area of the EYFS curriculum.  Geography is introduced though activities that encourage children to make comments and ask questions about aspects of their familiar world and to make observations of natural objects. Children are taught to show respect for living things and the environment. These activities are planned around the children’s interests.

We are an inclusive school which ensures children and staff never stop learning; we set high expectations and aim to support individuals during every step of their journey to become equipped with the skills to be geographers, resulting in the acquisition of knowledge, concepts and skills.

At Leigh Church of England Academy, in conjunction with the aims of the National Curriculum, our geography teaching offers opportunities for children to gain:

  • A secure knowledge of where places are and what they are like, both in Britain and the wider world.
  • An understanding of the ways in which places are interdependent and interconnected
  • A wide range of geographical knowledge and vocabulary.
  • The ability to apply questioning skills and make links with mathematical and scientific skills, in order to record, interpret/analyse geographical findings.
  • The ability to express balanced opinions, rooted in knowledge and understanding about current issues in society and the environment.
  • Fieldwork skills.
  • A genuine interest in the subject and a real sense of curiosity about the world and the people who live here.
